What is dog whistle politics?

I must admit, before an episode of Scandal, I had never even heard the phrase “dog whistle politics” and really had no clue what it even meant until half-way through the episode.

So, for those who are as ill informed as I am, allow me to break it down for you.

Dog-whistle politics is political messaging employing coded language that appears to mean one thing to the general population but has an additional, different or more specific . . . → Read More: What is dog whistle politics?

How would you convince me to vote for Hillary Clinton?

In case you are new here, I am a low-income, black woman.

I was going to write this post yesterday but I decided to wait until after the Presidential Debate.

I am looking for some commentators who . . . → Read More: How would you convince me to vote for Hillary Clinton?

A goal that was getting harder and harder every years as not only my age was going up every year but so was the size of my clothes.

No longer could I squeak by . . . → Read More: I am actually losing weight in 2016. It’s a miracle!!

20 Years later is Welfare a bold experiment that failed?

It's been 20 years. Has welfare reform been a success or a failure?

2016 marks 20 years since Bill Clinton’s welfare reform.

1996. The year my second child was born.

It seems like just yesterday and yet 20 years have passed.

I found this wonderful video on the NY Times by Retro Report entitled Welfare and the Politics of Poverty.

In 1934, President Johnson signed into law a welfare reform to help destitute widows and children.

In 1996, Bill Clinton, co-signed the Republican belief that all poor people . . . → Read More: 20 Years later is Welfare a bold experiment that failed?

Confession of a Welfare Queen

I have a confession to make. Something that only my real life friends and family know about me.

And it scares me spitless to confess this outloud…to the world.

I am a Welfare Queen.

Yep. Food stamps. Medicare. Section 8 Housing. The whole 9 yards.

The only thing that my family does not receive is WIC (no more babies here, thank God!) and TANF (Temporary Assistance to Need Families: that’s the welfare check if you . . . → Read More: Confession of a Welfare Queen
